Chemical Reactions
(An Exothermic Reaction)

Hypothesis:
I think the two mixtures will mix together easily and make a sticky substance.

MATERIALS: Plastic cup, 2 small cups 30mL, newspaper, latex gloves, liquid b, liquid a, paper towel, goggles

Procedure:
1- Place a paper towel or newspaper
2- Place 30mL of liquid A in the plastic cup.
3-Add 30mL of liquid B to the cup
4-Gently Stir
5-Make observations according to handout

Observations:
  • The liquids do not mix easily
  • The two liquids turn grey after mixing
  • The mixture slowly starts expanding
  • The liquid turns a lighter brown and it starts to expand faster
  • The mushroom of foam pops and flattens out
  • The cup heatens up
  • Texture is like a sticky adhesive

Analysis:
  1. Whas your hypothesis right? Why?
My hypothesis was right to a degree. The substances did form into a sticky, gooey product, but it did not mix easily.
2.What evidence of a exothermic reaction did you see?
The heat expands inside the substance and then released it makes it an exothermic reaction.
3. Did you abserve any other evidence of a chemical reaction?
Yes, beacuse two substances were added together and formed a new substance, this whole experiment was a chemical reaction.
4.Do you think it would be possible to measure the volume or mass during the experiment if you were to do it again? If so, How?
No, because it is next to impossible for you to attain all of the substance and then measure the exact mass or volume of this substance

Conclusion:
This experiment was very interesting. I never knew these substances mixed. It's product was also very interesting, especially when it expanded and popped. This was very good evidence of a exothermic reaction. I would definetely do this experiment again.
